Boston, Massachusetts heavy metal veterans Killswitch Engage are celebrating the ten year anniversary of their second studio album “Alive or Just Breathing” that was released on May 21, 2002 through Roadrunner Records. The album burst Killswitch Engage into the heavy metal spotlight sending them across the world and back on countless tours. This past January former vocalist Howard Jones amicably parted ways with the band after handling vocal duties for nearly a decade. In February Killswitch Engage announced that they had reunited with their original vocalist, Jesse Leach. During auditions, Leach blew the band away with his assertive command over the band’s new and old material. “The room seemed charged with electricity, and the choice became very clear and apparent” said the band in regards to Leach’s audition. With Leach having been the band’s vocalist on “Alive or Just Breathing“, in conjunction with it being the album’s ten year anniversary, it made perfect sense for the band to celebrate by embarking on an anniversary tour. As part of the tour, Killswitch Engage will be performing “Alive or Just Breathing” in its entirety along with other hits. “This is truly a new era in Killswitch Engage history, and it is ready to shred your face off” said the band in regards to their feelings of being regrouped and reunited with their original vocalist, Jesse Leach.
Killswitch Engage recruited their longtime friends, and fellow Boston natives, Shadows Fall to be a part of the tour. Shadows Fall just released their 7th studio album “Fire From the Sky” on Razor and Tie Records this past May. The band spent over a year working on the album fine tuning every piece of it until they were completely satisfied. Long time friend, and Killswitch Engage guitarist, Adam Dutkiewicz produced the album for the band. Something Shadows Fall had been attempting to make happen for years, but due to conflicting schedules it had not been possible until recently. Vocalist Brian Fair had this to say about recording with Dutkiewicz, “He’s going to push you to get the most out of yourself, to make the most for the songs and to make the record as good as it can be. And he’s not afraid to let you know when whatever you’re dong isn’t working. He’d say to me, ‘That’s not even bad, that’s just wrong.’ I’d go, ‘What do you mean wrong? It’s what I’m feeling.’ And he’d say, ‘Well, what you’re feeling is wrong.’ It’s good to have someone with great ears, and who isn’t as close to the music as you are put down the iron fist from time to time. He’s definitely not afraid to take that role.” With a furious onslaught of crunching guitar rhythms and spine tingling vocals, Shadows Fall deliver a nonstop fury of metal music whenever they take the stage.
Also along for the tour is another Boston based metal band, Acaro. “Five hard working individuals, who bring five different backgrounds to create one unique musical experience” is a bit of an understatement for these creators of their own blend of “face melting metal”. Acaro strive to always give their crowds more than they could ever expect from a performance. The band are self-admitted perfectionists openly admitting that they will never truly be satisfied with their musical abilities, and will always be striving to perfect and better their craft. This is certainly never a bad quality for a band to possess these days. Acaro released their first studio album, “The Disease of Fear“, in 2011 on Goomba Music and have been heavily promoting it across the country sharing the stage with In Flames, Gojira, Lamb of God, and many more. The band sums their future up best, “We are Acaro and we believe. Soon, so will you.”
The tour will be stopping at one of Chicago’s premier concert venues, Bottom Lounge, on December 10, 2012. The venue sits in a prime location just west of the Loop in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. Along with a concert venue there is also a restaurant specializing in American comfort food, along with many vegetarian/vegan options, multiple fully stocked bars, an upstairs lounge and dining area, and a rooftop deck that provides immaculate views of the Chicago skyline. Bottom Lounge is conveniently located within minutes from multiple expressways, has plenty of street parking available, and is also easily accessible through public transportation.
With two east coast veteran heavy metal acts performing together, this is certainly a performance to not be missed. Original Killswitch Engage fans from tens years ago will certainly be ecstatic to see original vocalist Jesse Leach back in action with the band. Plenty of newer Killswitch fans from the Howard Jones era may be a bit skeptical of Leach on vocals, however they need not worry. Leach will be performing both old and new Killswitch tracks to keep all of their fans pleased. Any doubtful fans out there should certainly go listen to “Alive or Just Breathing“, and realize that this album catapulted the band into spotlight. Shadows Fall is notoriously known for their nonstop, high energy live performances that are one of a kind and not to be missed. With Acaro also added into the mix, you have a trio of Boston based heavy metal bands promising a once in a lifetime performance.
