Genre: Heavy Metal
Label: Search and Destroy Records
AxeWound’s debut album “Vultures” embodies the pure essence of what heavy metal truly is. The newly formed British-Canadian super group brings together an all-star lineup of musicians wanting to venture beyond the sounds, styles, and preconceived notions of their already successful bands. Liam Cormier of the Canadian band Cancer Bats handles lead vocal duties with Bullet For My Valentine’s Matt Tuck on guitar and backup vocals. Mike Kingswood of Glamour of the Kill handles guitar duties alongside Tuck helping to reinforce the heavy thrash and hardcore tones produced by the band. Pounding bass rhythms are provided by Joe Cupcutt the former bassist for Rise to Remain. AxeWound is then rounded out with one of the world’s most underrated, yet extremely talented, drummers, Jason Bowld from the band Pitchshifter. Bowld’s nonstop dynamic assault on the drums adds the final touches to this one of a kind super group.
From the moment the album’s title track “Vultures” kicks in, AxeWound wastes no time getting straight to the point. An all out musical fury ensues showcasing exactly what listeners should anticipate throughout the rest of the album, heavy metal. Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold does a guest guitar solo on the albums title track, “Vultures“, that fits the song exceptionally well blending naturally with Tuck and Kingswood’s riffs as if Gates was a regular member of the band. Liam and Matt’s vocals are spot on throughout the album with their screams resembling those of someone whose life depended on it. Drummer Jason Bowld provides mind boggling polyrhythmic fills and breakdowns that at times are so fast and technical they seem to be not even humanly possible.
Back in October 2011 Bullet For My Valentine guitarist Matt Tuck made the announcement in an interview that he was working on a “Metal as f*ck” side project. On May 1, 2012 AxeWound officially unveiled themselves to the world, and also debuted their first single “Post Apocalyptic Party“. Tuck also said in the interview that ultimately he was striving to produce something “Just f*cking violent. Let it all out. No holds barred.” With an all-star lineup of musicians sharing the same interests as Tuck, Axewound’s debut album “Vultures” delivers just that.
“When the world has gone to hell, and there’s nowhere left to turn, this is our final countdown till we die” gives a glimpse into the band’s mindset and approach when writing and recording “Vultures“. It also happens to be the chorus for “Post Apocalyptic Party“. AxeWound without a doubt deliver as they had promised on “Vultures” providing listeners with a pure dose of heavy metal blended with hardcore, thrash, and more. Fans of Cancer Bats, Bullet For My Valentine, Glamour of the Kill, Rise to Remain, and Pitchshifter should have no problems banging their heads to AxeWound.
Bullet For My Valentine fans especially should enjoy the album as they will be hearing a completely different side guitarist/vocalist Matt Tuck. Piercing screams and deep growls backed with extremely heavy guitar rhythms is a step up from Tuck’s normal routine that certainly works quite well for him and the rest of AxeWound. A few tracks on the album such as “Exochrist” and “Cold” provide some of Tuck’s signature clean vocals that Bullet For My Valentine fans have come to love and adore over the years. When joined with front man Liam Cormier’s bludgeoning screams and shouts, the two vocalists create harmonies that will captivate listeners for years to come. Rest assured as every member of AxeWound holds nothing back on the album creating an exquisite culmination of heavy metal music to inspire generations both old and new. AxeWound is embarking on a short tour during November and December performing at select locations throughout North America.
